Seniors' Captain's Charity Day

More than 60 of Newark’s Seniors Section turned out to pay a fiver to play in Seniors’ Captain Len Astill’s Charity Day, in aid of Beaumond House Community Hospice

It was a tight finish on a windy but bright day, with Simon Channon (14 handicap) winning with 38 pts.  Paul Speakman (6) was second with 37 and Howard Wibberley (16), with a back nine of 21, was best of a group on 36.

The Seniors Section raised funds for Beaumond House throughout the year.  This event’s £300+ will be added to proceeds from raffles and fines, to be presented to Beaumond House after the Hole in One event in the autumn.

Seniors Exchange Day... a good day for new recruits!

Rock Hastings and Graeme MacDonald, two of the most recent recruits to Newark Golf Club’s Seniors’ section, were the principal winners at the Exchange Day at Beeston Fields GC on 17 June.

Conditions were difficult, with slippery greens, lush fairways and a strong wind.

Only Hastings and Chris Davies managed 36 Stableford points, with Hastings having the better back nine to collect the trophy and his prize. MacDonald, and his team of Trevor Harris, David Tucker and John Allen, won the team competition with 78 points. MacDonald also won the nearest the pin competition.

In all, 36 Seniors took part and a decent amount of money was raised for Beaumond House via a series of ‘silly’ fines.

Local Charities benefit by over £3600

Beaumond House benefited handsomely at the Seniors-organised hole-in-one day in early October.  Over 70 Members paid a tenner each to enter the competition, which featured a new Kia Stonic as the special prize for an ace at the 15th (not won) - courtesy of Grantham dealer Victor Wood.

Adding raffle takings and other money previously collected at the Club to the day’s proceeds pushed the final figure over £2600.  Former Seniors’ Captain and Secretary Peter Smith once more played a pivotal role in the day’s success.

The cheque was presented by Seniors’ Captain Keith Martin.  He also handed a cheque for £1050 to the Newark-based Childrens’ Bereavement Centre, his personal charity for the year.  Seniors have been contributing to this fund since the start of the year, not least via fines for losing in inter-Club matches!

The benign conditions led to good scoring, with countback needed to determine the first four prizes.  The winner, with 39 points, was Peter Trafford.  Second, also on 39, was Paul Ackroyd.  Third went to Howard Wibberley on 38pts, with Pat Roche in fourth, also on 38.  Nearest-the-pin prizes went to James Gilmour, Micky Paton and Pat Roche.

Newark Senior’s 40th Anniversary Dinner Dance

Newark Seniors celebrated 40 years of Seniors golf at their annual Dinner Dance at the Club yesterday evening.
Over 70 members, partners and friends had a great evening with an excellent meal followed by a mix of dancing that would have produced the full range of comments from the Strictly Judges.
Our thanks for making the evening so enjoyable go to the Club staff. Jack and Matt in particular along with Rina our Social Events Organiser and Simon our Club Manager both of whom displayed new talents in keeping tables supplied with food and refreshments along with the rest of the team. Everyone's efforts were very appreciated.
The photographs give a flavour of the occasion.
