Tom Bean Sets the Course Record
I hope the 61 members who played in the Black Monday competition this week enjoyed the new challenge. There were more risk and reward shots and the trees and bunkers were more challenging on certain holes. The CSS was the same as the SSS of 66, and only 5 players played below par. Most notable was Tom Bean's Gross 62, Net 63 which sets the course record. Best Net on countback was John Barcas with 63 playing off 22, showing that the Black Tees are scorable for players at both ends of the Handicap range.
I may have been a bit ambitious making the 12th a par 3, but whatever it is, it doesn't alter a medal score or handicaps. We'll have to review that one over a few rounds. There were no birdies, 4 pars and 31 bogeys and it was the toughest hole. If it had been a par 4 it would have been about stroke 12.
Holes 9, 10 and 18 produced the most birdies, but it was interesting that there were no eagles recorded on any hole.
If incoming Captain Sean is in agreement, we shall play the course once a quarter
It's Official ! The Scratch Team WIN the league !
Following defeats for Norwood, Coxmoor and Worksop on Monday evening, our scratch team cannot be caught, they have a 5 point lead with one match to play. So we can start celebrating now, or we can congratulate them all at Beeston Fields a week on Monday. Please come along and give them your support. I cannot remember Newark winning the scratch lead before, I'll do some digging and see if I can confirm it.
Thanks for all who took part in the New Members Competition, it was a great day with 39 players taking part and the Ladies carried the day. Congratulations to Josie Wakes, Julia Hatcher and Vanessa Siddons who won with 86 points.
The Black Monday Gents Medal is on Howdidido, there are several places remaining.
Also on 29th of August, there is a Par 3 away day at Nailcote Hall near Coventry. This is an inexpensive day out and all members are welcome. Entry sheet is in the spike bar.
The entry sheet for the Ryder Cup weekend will be coming down soon, if you haven't got a team, put your name down anyway, we will try to get you made up.
Look out also for the 3 club team competition ( this year you can add your putter), entry fee is £5.00, and it includes a burger or similar.
That's all fir now folks.

Captain's News 4.8.14
A big thank you to all of the volunteers who helped to make the Newark Open a successful day.
Thanks to the starters, reception and the halfway house, and of course to Keith Whitfield and Kevin Ferguson from the competitions committee.
Without volunteers we could not hope to put on such an event. We had 200 players, many visiting for the first time and the feedback was once again very positive.
