Captain’s Away Day

An early start with a hearty breakfast in the clubhouse and a hastily arranged 9 hole fiddle started a fantastic day of golf followed by an evening of good food, wine and great company.

The coach left Newark Golf Club car park at 11.30am with the majority of players on board, everybody with great plans on how they were going to tackle the former Ryder Cup Course.

On arrival we joined the rest of the competitors who had made their own way;  64 players in total; bathed in sunshine we enjoyed lunch overlooking the 1st tee and 18th green.

1.30pm arrived and my team stepped on to the 1st tee feeling a little nervous, this would soon disappear after The Captain thundered his opening tee shot to the corner of the dogleg, this unfortunately would prove to be the highlight of his round.

The teams continued to go out until 3.30pm and battle commenced, my team arrived back at the clubhouse, washed and changed and ready to watch the drama unfold on the 18th green.

Dinner was served in the main clubhouse and results were announced, big congratulation to Keith, Roger, Craig and Ashley with a fine winning score of 87 points.

Charlie then delivered his now annual register of fines for players who had not conducted themselves in a professional manner on the course; I think we were all on the list for some reason or another. The day came to an end when the coach left Lindrick at 10pm, however the evening continued for some revellers a little later into Saturday morning.

I would like to thank everybody who attended for making it a memorable day and special thank you to Steve Patterson for donating the raffle prizes, Charlie Lager for his comedy routine and Maurice Mayfield for helping me with the cards and prize presentation.

In excess of £550 was raised for this year’s Charity.

Captain’s News May 2015

Well, the season is well under way and my diary is filling up rapidly, it’s times like these you truly appreciate the team of people we have working within our great golf club.

The work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure all our open and club competitions, not to mention the added responsibility of the county events,  is testament to all our employees and relevant committees; keep up the good work folks.

Since my last report about the Winter League Final, our scratch team has started its defence of the Division One title they won last year, after a rocky start losing a tight first match against The Nottinghamshire, Captain Alex Claricotes has steadied the ship and we have won our last matches against Sherwood at home and Retford away; we host Worksop on Monday June 22nd, which will be pivotal to our continued efforts to retain the league title. The support from our members has been fantastic so far this year, so anybody who enjoys watching great golf, come along and support your scratch team, it really is a great evening.

Congratulations to our Assistant Professional Connor Steels, after his victory in Nottinghamshire Assistants Strokeplay Championship, 2 great rounds at Rufford Park from Connor means he now holds both the Strokeplay and Matchplay titles. Anybody who has seen Connor’s ball striking will understand what a bright future this young man has in the game.

The Charity AM AM took place on Friday 22nd May and, as always, was wonderfully supported.  A big thank you to all the people who helped on the day, and a massive congratulations to David Hood who organised the day, he worked tirelessly from early morning to finally sitting down for his dinner around 9pm. The day raised in excess of £1800 for Beaumond House Community Hospice, a great effort I’m sure you will agree.

As the County Course for 2015 we hosted the Nottinghamshire County Amateur Strokeplay Championship on Saturday 30th May, an event played over 36 holes. It was great to see so many spectators that were treated to a wonderful exhibition of golf from over 60 of the best amateur golfers in Nottinghamshire.  Matt Hogg of Rushcliffe ran out as winner with a score of -5, but was run very close by our own Steven Brotherhood -1 and Charlie Lager +1 - both players have qualified for the Matchplay event later in the year.

I Hope the lucky members who were drawn to play courtesy rounds at various courses throughout the county had an enjoyable day.

Finally, I am hosting a Captains Charity Cabaret Evening on Saturday 27th June, ‘An Evening at The Musicals’. My Daughter Charlotte and her singing Partner Ben Hinks are back for a Summer break from the P & O Cruise Ship, The Pacific Eden and have very kindly offered to perform their cabarets from the ship in our clubhouse, to raise money for my Charity this year, Breast Cancer Research. Tickets are £25 each and as well as the cabaret  the evening includes  a fabulous two course summer buffet and disco with all profits going to this very worthwhile Charity, ticket sales are going very well and your support would be very much appreciated.
