A trip to Gainsborough Golf Club proved a popular destination with a record 48 members travelling on this day out. The day did not go exactly to plan as on arrival we found the Thonock (Parks) Old course had been recently tined and sanded, so the executive decision was made to move us to The Lakes course.
We had tea/coffee bacon roll on arrival which was a welcome start to the day. A pairs betterball with 90% Handicap allowance was the game for the trip, with a "friendly" selection to confirm pairings and times.
The course was in excellent condition, and although a few of us thought it was challening, this was clearly not the case for the winners and runners up on the day - posting some superb scores - so well done all.
Due to the numbers we were asked to "eat on completion" of our golf, so we took our tables in our four balls, and were treated to a fantastic carvery with Beef, Turkey and Honey Roast Gammon accompanied with a huge selection of vegetables and potatoes. If you had a tiny bit of each, your plate was "groaning" all the way back to the table! In fact some of the plates would have taken an accomplished mountaineer a while to conquer!!! Swiftly followed by either apple and berry crumble with custard, or creme brulee and tea or coffee. A faultless performance by the staff on the day made the day very special.on
Scores on the doors were as follows : -
1st placed team Andy & Gill Coupland with 41 Points
2nd placed team Tish applewhite & Paul Speakman with 40 Points
3rd placed team Mark & Shelley Pritchard with 38 Points
4th placed team Ken & Nina Brittain with 37 point on Countback.
Congratulations to all of the winners, superb scores on a long and tough track!
It was lovely to see a wide variety of players taking part in this event, a special thank you to a few of our "single" golfers for joining us, a thank you too to Neil Allen for joining us.
We were given a £2 discount on the day, which was kindly donated to my charity - so many thanks - this added £96 to my running total. As a thank you a "Swingsmart" worth approximately £150 was donated to the winner on the day - which was randomly picked from the list of players. Contratulations to Mike Paulson - we expect your handicap to come down once you get this gadget working!
Just before we were due to leave Mr. Danny Shields (organiser from Gainsborough) came over to report on the visit to Newark. He reported that everyone had a fantastic day. So much so that a couple of the guys were getting together a couple of four balls to return to play the course again. They said the day had proved to be one of the best days out they had organised and asked me to thank everyone at Newark especially Nick and Karen who had made everyone very welcome. He also asked me to thank our chef as the food was outstanding. So well done the team at Newark.
All in all a lovely way to play golf, with everyone being able to play another course and enjoy a social day out at no more than the cost of the food and a small donation towards the prizes. I myself am looking forward to next year when we are visiting Spalding - so get the date in your diary when it is published.
I hope you all enjoyed the day as much as I did.
