Junior Golf at Newark
We have a dedicated group of parents young and old together with a Junior Organiser to ensure the smooth running of the Junior Section including legislative requirements and health&safety.
Our Junior Captain for 2016 is Alexander Wright, known to his peers as AJ. He started playing golf at the age three with his dad and grandad. At the age of five he moved to Newark and started the junior nippers (passport to golf) session with Peter Lockley and Andy Forsyth (PGA assistant pro). AJ continued to play with his dad and at the age of eight became a junior member of Newark GC. AJ joined the Nottinghamshire Nippers tour and was soon to be spotted to join the Nottinghamshire Pathway Squad for young aspiring golfers to attend training sessions at Woodhall Spa and was selected for the County coaching programme. By the age of ten AJ was playing in all the junior competitions and a regular member of the club junior team being mentored by other talented juniors in the team, some of which have become professionals. As well as representing Nottinghamshire County teams AJ has since moved counties to Lincolnshire and is currently playing for their under 18's squad. AJ has had many successes with junior and senior club competitions at Newark Aj has himself become a role model for other youngsters at Newark and aspires to undertake his university placement in the USA on a golfing programme/scholarship. We wish him well and lots of success for the forth coming season and the very best of luck for the future.
Junior coaching is available with our club professional on Saturday and Sunday mornings throughout the season. Our Professional Robert Ellis uses the Junior Golf Passport a national learning programme for young people. It is a comprehensive, progressive and structured programme designed to help young people learn about playing the game of golf. Golf is a regular activity for many children and young people and its influence on their lives is significant. Newark Golf Club recognises that every child and young person has the right to have fun, be safe and free from harm when participating in organised golfing activities. www.childreningolf.org will provide more information and guidance on the child protection standards we follow.
During the season there are a number of Junior competitions for all juniors with handicaps. Trophies to play for include: Grant&Green Trophy, The Junior Cup, Slaney Rollitt Trophy, Photostatic Cup, 2 Bobs Trophy, Cedric Best Trophy and the Tony Bennett Trophy. Again this year we have included a team match with the club’s senior members which will enable our juniors to benefit from playing with some of our more experienced golfers. Also, a number of Inter-Club League Matches have been organised. Also we play for the annual Oldham Rosebowl with Seacroft juniors.
Finally, we do have vacancies for new junior members, so if you are interested in joining our excellent golf club contact any member of staff for an Application Form.
