Access to Newark Golf Club on the A17

We are experiencing more and more incidents at the main entrance to the golf club from the A17.  There are several reasons for the accidents; the main one relates to traffic waiting to turn into the Golf Club.  This can cause a build up of several vehicles; the accidents are mostly occuring three or four vehicles back by other vehicles failing to slow down.  An added danger is that occasionly vehicles will also try to overtake prior to the Golf Club turning.  Despite repeated requests for more definitive signing into the Golf Club, along with no overtaking and speed restriction signs, Nottinghamshire Highways have to date been unable to respond positvely.  We have cleared the hedge growth away from the signs but it is advisable as you approach the golf club to slow down early and clearly indicate your intentions.

St Andrews Experience

It’s cold, it’s windy and the forecast is for the wind to strengthen with rain arriving later in the day.  This must be Scotland – Actually it’s The Old Course St Andrews.

We struck lucky with The Old Course daily ballot on a recent golfing trip to Fife.  Although which verity of luck, good or bad, is a matter of some debate.  We now appreciate what a pot bunker is and how brutal the St Andrews bunkers are.  The strength of the wind making missing bunkers a matter of luck rather than judgement, with yardages impossible to judge.

It extremely interesting to see how one of the world’s top courses prepare their holes and how little the grass is managed in some areas of the course.  This links is not prepared like a municipal park, some areas are paid little attention.  The green staff’s energies concentrated presenting the playing areas of the holes to a very high standard.

All in all a great experience, although we’ll keep the scores between ourselves and the golfing gods.

John Robertson, Kevin Baines and Gary Goodwin

Four Star Rating for Newark Golf Club

Newark Golf Club was given a 4 star rating in Todays Golfer magazine

''New bunkers and old trees make this a very tricky course. Precision iron play should be rewarded with some decent birdie chances. The greens are among the best in the area and the clubhouse is superb''
