COUNTY CAPTAIN WINS STROKEPLAY
COUNTY CAPTAIN WINS STROKEPLAY
County Secretary Report
66 players played in the event on Saturday May 30 at Newark Golf Club. The course was in pristine condition and the County were made to feel very welcome. Congratulations must go to the Head Green keeper and his team for presenting the course so well early in the season.
The golf and scoring were of the highest standard despite it being windy and quite cold.
Opening rounds of 68 from the County Captain Matt Hogg (Rushcliffe GC) and Lee Shepherd (Sherwood Forest GC) saw them head the field in the morning. Other notable sub par rounds of 70 were produced from Dominic Tinsley (Wollaton Park GC) and Adam Dorricott (Chilwell Manor GC).
Matt Hogg's morning lead was eradicated by one of his playing partners, Steve Brotherhood (Newark GC), creating a tight finish, but a solid last few holes from Matt and a slight falter from Steve saw Matt cross the finish line 4 shots ahead of his playing partner on 137 for the two rounds, leaving Steve in 4th place and Lee Shepherd taking 2nd spot with a final round of 72.

Midlands Golfer Magazine
The December issue of Midlands Golfer Magazine sees contributor Matt Payne put together his opinion of the best compilation course of Midlands Golf Clubs.
Which hole does he open this course with.
The 1st Hole at Newark Golf Club obviously!
Matt's reasoning. "A nice, tree lined almost Woburn like start, although it's a tricky starting hole with distance and accuracy required, installing the focus needed for a good score."
Meeting Our New Clubhouse Manager
Originally from Yorkshire, Nick Birch has worked at several golf clubs around the country in a variety of roles including Head Chef, Catering Manager, Club Franchisee and General Manager.
Learning his golf at Beadlow Manor GC in Bedfordshire, whilst also working there as Assistant Manager he would regularly play with the professional and held down a single figure handicap. He still found the time to learn from the people around him, keen to know as many aspects of running a golf club as possible.
His next venture took him to Manchester, serving as Club House Manager for over 10 years within the private members club Didsbury GC. An exciting era for golf as the game developed and memberships became more easily accessible to a wider audience. Nick worked well in this environment with his friendly approach and made the club welcoming to all.
After brief period managing public houses he was back in the golfing world again with BGL Golf. Based at their Nottingham course (Ramsdale Park GC) Nick was with the club from the beginning, as catering franchisee, when it opened in 1992. When the club manager, left after 10 years, Nick was the obvious choice for the General Manager role as he had grown the business from the beginning. He accepted the offer of the position and worked closely with Director of Golf, Robert Macey (Norwood Park GC) for 6 years taking the club forward and building their reputation as one of Nottingham’s best golf destinations. 2005 was a standout year as Nick received group manager of the year award, achieved Investors in People accreditation and Golf Mark award with High Achiever.
Nick has training and qualifications across a broad spectrum including Health and Safety, Food Safety, Customer Service, Employment Law and Child Protection.
Joining Newark GC in December 2014 he will bring his enthusiastic and committed approach and many years’ experience in the golf club hospitality and management to take the golf club, together with the members and directors, from strength to strength.
