Adam Woolley
Mixed: Inter-Club Foursomes v Coxmoor.

Newark GC travelled to the neutral venue of College Pines GC for this quarter final and came away as convincing winners against Coxmoor GC. The Newark pairings have previously beaten opposition that had plenty of handicap shots to help [seventeen in one of the games] in the preceding rounds. Upon this occasion, both pairings gave away one shot apiece.

Jim Hallam [carrying] and Brenda Wood [caddied by Josie Wake] formed the first pairing as the match commenced in the light drizzle of the late afternoon. Newark won the second and third holes but lost the fourth to arrive at the eighth [Par 4 at 294 yards] at 1 Up. Hallam drove to the first cut upon the left hand side of the green. Wood chipped twenty feet to tap in range and a birdie extended the lead. Another win followed before the game arrived at the twelfth hole [Par 4 at 436 yards and SI 1]. This went with the Coxmoor shot but Newark still held a 2 Up lead and started to pull away from the opposition with par wins at the thirteenth and fourteenth holes. At fifteen [Par 3 at 160 yards], Wood found the green with ease for Hallam to lag up for a tap in par. Another win and 5 Up in the game. The sixteenth hole [Par 5 at 514 yds] saw a slight retardation of the juggernaut momentum of the Newark pairings progress. However, it was Coxmoor who were struggling to halve the hole. Following a fine Hallam drive, Wood [following in similar fashion] bisected the yellow marker posts that identified the non-hazard section of the ditch that crossed the fairway. A thirty foot pitch and a six foot lag set up a tap in par. Coxmoor had found the green in regulation, but from longer range. They did well to find the hole in two from a fast looking downhill putt from twenty feet. However, the Coxmoor challenge had finally faded away as wins at seventeen and eighteen saw the effervescent pairing of Hallam and Wood fizzle in at 7 Up winners.

The second Newark pairing saw a selection problem materialize for Club Captain Fraser Macintyre as scratch team captain, John E Cooke jnr was a withdrawal. John Cooke and Eva Glasby had formed a reliable pairing that had delivered success in the previous rounds. Macintyre, within a flashing moment of ingenuity, decided to play Adam Woolley in the fixture. Woolley was in good form coming out of the two rounds of the Scratch Cup, two days earlier, at a three over par 145. This was to be Woolley’s first appearance in the inter-club foursomes. After the first four holes Newark was 4 Down as Coxmoor completed in two under gross. The ascendency [as it transpired] of the first pairing would be rendered to futile if there was not a reversal of fortune in the second game. Somehow, there was an alteration, if only to the winning of the holes. Wins at six, seven and eight saw Newark 1 Down after the ninth. At the tenth [Par 4 at 455 yards] Woolley [carrying] put a lengthy drive down the centre of the fairway. Coxmoor had already teed off to find thigh-high grass and bushes, but no ball, to the left of the pair of  fairway traps, upon the left hand side of the fairway. Hole conceded by Coxmoor. A half at eleven bought the Newark pairing to the pivotal point of their game and possibly the match. The twelfth [Par 4 at 436 yards, SI 1] was the Coxmoor shot hole. They found out of bounds and Newark won the hole with par to go 1 Up for the first time in the game. Thirteen [Par 4 at 342 yards] saw the second crushing blow as Eva Glasby [caddied by Josie Pepper] sent a fine tee shot down the centre of the fairway. Woolley pulled a superb approach shot out of the scratch cup performance, putting the ball to six inches of the hole. Birdie putt conceded for 2 Up. Glasby sunk a five foot putt for birdie at the fourteenth [Par 5 at 499 yards] following another fine approach shot from Woolley to put Newark at 3 Up in the game. Newark loose fifteen and eighteen, but win sixteen and seventeen, finishing at 3 Up for the game.

Aggregate score for the match is 10 Up to Newark. Subsequently, Newark will play Rushcliffe GC, at Worksop, in the semi-final, upon Monday 9th August with a 4 pm start [approx]. Supporters are requisite, desirable and welcome.

Mixed: Mixed Open.

The home side pairing of Reginald and Marjorie Dove put course knowledge to good use and total 46 points to win the competition. Margorie Dove got the pairing off to a flying start coming away from the fifth hole at two over gross. Reg Dove placed himself onto the scorecard at this point contributing five pars and two birdies [at seven and eleven] through the middle section of the round. A birdie at seventeen and a par at eighteen from Margorie Dove were enough to see the pair home ahead of Newark pairing John Williams and Jill Todd with 44 points and second place.

Ladies: Enos Smith.

Laura Hill put her name onto the cup for the third time. She emerged as the clear winner of the competition with the lowest gross scores in both of the two rounds, played a week apart. Round One saw 85-14 = 71, while Round Two was completed in 79-14=65.

Juniors: Junior Open.

Jacob Morley [Market Rasen] took first place with net 64. Countback decided the next three places as Joseph Vanaman [Notts]; Amy Oxbury [Norwood Pk] and John B Blagg jnr [Newark] were in second to fourth respectively with net 67. Newark members Alex Whitfield and Alex Clarricoates returned the lowest gross score of 74 from the 45 entries.
