Club Report 6

26-Jul-2011 : Club Report 6

July has been a very eventful month at Newark Golf Club culminating in Tim Cooke winning The Club Championship in what was a closely fought contest in blustery conditions.  At the end of the 36 holes Tim Cooke and Jim Hallam were level pegging on 146 so they continued into a 6 hole play off.  As was to be expected it was nip and tuck over the 6 holes; watched by a good number of spectators Tim achieved his victory by one shot and so became this year's Club Champion.

Earlier in the month Kevin McGinley won the Raynor Trophy with a fine nett 65.  Playing off a handicap of 17 Kevin got off to a great start with a 4 on the first and continued in that vein carding another 8 pars.  Following the Raynor Trophy was the Oldham Cup.  This is a Perpetual Challenge trophy presented by J.E. Oldham in 1931 for an annual challenge match between Newark and Seacroft Golf Clubs.  The match alternates between Newark and Seacroft and this year it was the turn of Newark to host the competition.  In 2007 there had been 67 matches played and the overall score was Seacroft 36 - Newark 33 but with 3 consecutive victories in 2008,2009 and 2010 the matches stood at 36 all.  A convincing win by Newark this year was duly forthcoming so the overall score now stands at Seacroft 36 - Newark 37.

On the 10th July the club hosted their Mixed Open which was once again well subscribed with visitors from as far afield as York, Leeds and Birmingham.  Despite the wet weather conditions, particularly in the afternoon, some excellent scores were returned with Jo Burndred and John Wignall from Lincoln Golf Club winning the competition with 46 points.

Finally the Scratch Team have played twice during the month; on the 4th July they visited Worksop losing 3 matches on the final hole to go down 4 -1 but then came back strongly with an excellent 5 - 0 victory over Rushcliffe.  They currently lie 2nd in the League behind Worksop Golf Club and just in front of Coxmoor Golf Club.

This is a quick report from the office.  If anyone would like to take over from Ivor and do the blog pop in and see us.
