28-Jun-2011 : Club Report 5
On Wednesday 22nd June the annual Gents Open Am Am took place. This is a difficult but interesting format. Playing in teams of four the best two scores count on holes 1 - 9; the best three on holes 10 - 17 and all four scores on the last. Teams from many different clubs throughout the midland region took part. An accident on the A1 caused a delay for many of the teams so congratulations are due to the organisers and helpers who ensured things continued to run smoothly despite the ever changing tee times. Two teams from Lingdale Golf Club finished 2nd and 3rd and indeed were looking likely winners until the Captain of Newark Golf Club, Maurice Mayfield, brought in his team of Fraser Macintyre, David Howson and Andy Roe with a magnificent score of 162; 19 shots under par ! Teams from Lincoln Golf Club and Gainsborough Golf Club finished in 4th and 5th places out of a total of 50 teams who took part.
Sunday 26th June, the hottest day of the year so far, saw over 200 members playing in the Captain's Day competition. Thanks to Graeme Macdonald and his team the golf course was in excellent condition. Golfers started teeing off at 7.30am and the final 3 ball left the first tee at 4.30pm; all playing for a superb prize table supplied by Club Captain Maurice Mayfield. The heat took it's toll and playing conditions were difficult but eventual overall winner Alex Clarricoates showed the way with an excellent 39 stableford points playing off a handicap of 3. Jim Hallam took the best gross prize with a level par score of 36 points.
The Scratch Team of John and Tim Cooke, Jim Hallam, Alex Clarricoates and Simon Collingwood continued their excellent start to the season with a 4½ - ½ home win over Chilwell Manor Golf Club on Monday 27th June. Supporters enjoyed watching a tight match which culminated in an excellent victory for the home team. Newark currently sit at the top of the Scratch League Division 1 with 10 points having played 4, Won 3, Halved 1 and Lost 0.
Other notable winners in recent weeks have been: Steven Fleming from Fernwood who won the Centenary Trophy with a nett 67; John Cooke won the best gross with a 74. Malcolm Wood from Collingham who was the winner of the Coronation Cup, also with a net 67; Malcolm had both the best nett and best gross score on the day. Finally Paul Johnson from Balderton was the winner of the Sean O'Grady competition with a nett 68, playing off a handicap of 19; the best gross score of the day was once again Malcolm Wood with a 73.
Finally, three of our Junior Members, Ryan MacLachlan, Ben Partridge and Alex Hales, represented their school, Carres Grammar School, Sleaford, in the Regional Schools golf competition held at Blankney on 10th May. Ryan and Ben both shot 76 nett and Alex 79 nett in difficult windy conditions, winning the competition and so going on to represent Lincolnshire Schools in the English Schools Team Championship to be held at Woodhall Spa on July 6th. Well done and good luck!
