Gentlemen: Nottinghamshire Interclub Scratch League: Division One. Newark v Coxmoor.
In the first match of the season Newark beat Coxmoor GC with a 3-2 score-line. Newark had received a bye in the first series of matches and needed to obtain a win to lift themselves off the bottom of the table. This was achieved with a good performance throughout the team. Coxmoor fielded a strong team including last seasons’ Notts amateur Order of Merit winner, and a couple of first team county players. John Cooke [3&1] and Tim Cooke provided wins. Tim Cooke was three down at the turn but fought back to win 2&1. He said. ”My short came good and I chipped my way to victory”. Dave Britten ground it out to the end for a half in his game and ensured that Newark would take a point from the match. A draw was guaranteed and the position set for debutante John Thompson to improve matters further. He sank a six foot birdie putt on eighteen to win the hole, halve his game and Newark had all the points.
