A combination of benign weather conditions and receptive greens provided excellent conditions for the field of 111 to produce good scores in the Ted Hastell Trophy. In warm temperatures during a windless day, the trophy was won by John E Cooke jnr. Cooke shot a 5 below par 66, which was the lowest gross score of the day. This produced 43 stableford points, a new record high for the competition. Newark GC is undergoing a rolling program of course improvements. The improvements are half way to completion, with the first nine holes developed upon schedule. The record score over the old course was set by tour professional Robert Rock. Cooke set a course record of 66 gross [net 64] over the new course.Cooke carded 9 pars and 7 birdies, barraging holes 7 to 12, on his way to the record score with only two blemishing bogies at the exacting 4th and 16th holes. At the 18th hole, a birdie putt of 4 feet lipped out leaving Cooke to tap in for par. Cooke felt that he had set up many opportunities for a better score. Upon a better day, with a hot putter, he could have gone lower.
