Maurice Mayfield

Captain v Vice Captain Competition

Maurice Mayfield is the Captain of Newark Golf Club for 2011. Joining the club in 1974 he has enjoyed 36 years of continuous membership. In the earlier years golf was not the primary sporting activity.  Working at Worthington Simpson for 46 yrs he represented the firm at football. He was also a keen racquets player and was secretary of the squash league at The Grove in the 1970’s. In recent years golf has come to the forefront of sporting interest. He has been a member of the Greens Committee at Newark during most of the period of the course improvement program which will be completed this year. While fulfilling the duties of Vice-Captain in 2010, he gave much time and input into the establishment of the recently introduced swing studio.  The first duty as Captain was the Team Match at home v Gainsborough. Mayfield with the club professional Robert Ellis got the home team off to a good start winning their game by 5 and 4. Unfortunately, other results went the wrong way and Newark lost the first of the 22 team match fixtures by 3 games to 5. The Captain v Vice Captain, better-ball pairs match-play competition, went the way of the selected team of Vice Captain, Dave Howson, by 8 ½ to 10 ½. Thirty nine pairings entered the competition which was highlighted by the exploits of 2008 scratch team captain, Duncan Martin. Following a fine drive off the 11th tee [par 5] he found the bottom of the cup with a four iron, to record an albatross 2.

Mayfield has selected the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance as one of the Clubs Charities for 2011. The second charity is the Newark and Notts’ Child Bereavement and Loss Centre, Sues Place for bereaved children. This is a joint effort in partnership with the Ladies Section of the Club. Ladies Section Captain for 2011 is Kath Sharman while Margaret Lewis takes on the role of Vice Captain.  The Captain of the Senior Section is Howard Lockwood while Bryan Spilsbury will be the seniors Vice Captain for 2011.
